When people first hear about Save the Date, the first question is almost always about privacy. "You record date conversations? What happens to that data?" It is a completely reasonable concern, and one we have thought about more than anything else in building this app.

This post covers exactly how Save the Date handles privacy, why mutual consent is non-negotiable, and what happens to your data at every stage.

The Consent Requirement: Why It Is Non-Negotiable

Save the Date requires both people to actively consent before any recording begins. This is not a toggle buried in settings. It is a prominent, mandatory step that happens before every date session.

Here is how it works:

  • Only the host needs the app. The guest consents via a link on their phone.
  • Both people join the same session using a shared pairing code.
  • Each person sees a clear consent screen explaining that the conversation will be recorded, transcribed, and analyzed.
  • Each person must actively tap "I Consent" before recording can start.
  • If either person declines or has not yet consented, the record button is disabled for both.
  • Either person can revoke consent at any time, which immediately stops the recording.

This design means it is structurally impossible to record someone without their knowledge or agreement. You cannot bypass, skip, or hack the consent step. It is built into the core architecture of the app, not bolted on as an afterthought. Learn more at the Trust Center.

What Data Gets Collected

During a date session, Save the Date collects:

  • Audio recording: The conversation between you and your date, captured from the time recording starts until it ends.
  • Session metadata: Duration, start time, end time. Basic information about the session itself.

That is it. The app does not access your contacts, messages, location, photos, or any other data on your phone. It records audio during the session and nothing else.

The Data Lifecycle: What Happens After Your Date

This is the part most people care about most, and it is where Save the Date is most deliberate:

  1. Audio upload: When you end the recording, the audio is uploaded to our servers for processing.
  2. Transcription: The audio is transcribed into text using AI transcription services.
  3. AI analysis: The transcript is analyzed by AI to generate your personalized insights.
  4. Audio deletion: After the insights are generated, the audio recording is automatically and permanently deleted from our servers. This is not a "soft delete" or "archived" state. The file is gone.
  5. Insight storage: Your AI-generated insights are stored so you can access them in the app. These insights reference moments from the conversation in paraphrased form, but they do not contain the raw transcript or a verbatim record of what was said.

The key principle is data minimization: we keep only what is necessary for the product to function (your insights) and delete everything else (the raw audio and transcript).

Why Auto-Delete Matters

The auto-delete policy is not just a nice feature. It is a fundamental design decision that shapes how the entire app works.

A recording of an intimate conversation is sensitive data. If it were stored indefinitely, it would be a liability for users, a target for bad actors, and a trust problem that would undermine the entire product. By deleting the audio after processing, we eliminate that risk entirely. Even in a hypothetical data breach, there are no conversation recordings to steal because they do not exist.

This also means that Save the Date cannot be used as a tool for surveillance or manipulation. You cannot go back and listen to old conversations. You cannot use recordings against someone. The audio exists only long enough to generate insights, and then it is gone.

What About the Transcript?

The transcript follows a similar lifecycle. It is generated during the analysis process and is not retained as a permanent record. The AI-generated insights are the end product, and they are written in a way that summarizes and paraphrases rather than quoting verbatim. You get the benefit of the analysis without a permanent record of the raw conversation.

How This Compares to Other Apps

Many apps collect far more data than Save the Date with far less transparency. Dating apps store your messages indefinitely. Social media platforms track your behavior across the web. Even voice assistants store audio clips for "quality improvement."

Save the Date takes the opposite approach. We collect the minimum data needed, use it for its intended purpose, and delete it as soon as that purpose is fulfilled. Our privacy page lays this out in plain language, and the full legal details are in our privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions About Privacy

Can my date access the recording after the date? No. The recording is deleted after processing. Neither you nor your date can access the raw audio after insights are generated.

Can I delete my insights? Yes. You can delete your insights at any time from within the app.

Does Save the Date share data with third parties? No. Your data is not sold, shared, or used for advertising. The only third-party services involved are the AI and transcription services used to generate your insights, and they are bound by strict data processing agreements.

What if I consent and then change my mind? You can revoke consent at any time during recording, which stops the recording immediately. If you want your data deleted after the fact, contact us and we will handle it.

Trust as a Feature

We believe that trust is the most important feature of Save the Date. If you do not trust the app with your conversations, nothing else matters. That is why privacy and consent are not afterthoughts or marketing language. They are the foundation everything else is built on.
